How It Works
A special light-sensitizing agent is applied to the skin.
After an incubation period, the area is activated using red light.
Damaged cells are selectively destroyed, leaving healthy skin untouched.

Fewer breakouts
Minimal downtime
We don’t just treat symptoms—we help you understand your condition and manage it confidently.

Mohs Surgery
Mohs surgery is a highly specialized procedure used to treat certain types of skin cancer with maximum precision and the highest cure rate available. It is named after Dr. Frederic Mohs, who developed the technique.
This procedure is unique because it involves the systematic removal and immediate microscopic examination of cancerous tissue, one layer at a time. The goal is to remove all cancer cells while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.
Mohs surgery offers the best of both worlds: medical precision and cosmetic preservation.
It is the treatment of choice for many high-risk, aggressive, or recurring skin cancers.
What are the advantages of Mohs surgery?
Highest cure rate
Tissue Preservation
Immediate Results
Minimally Invasive
Optimal Cosmetic Outcome
Cost-Effective in the Long Run
Mohs surgery combines the highest level of accuracy with the least amount of tissue loss, making it an ideal option for many skin cancer patients.
How is Mohs surgery different from other skin cancer treatments?
-
Mohs surgery removes the cancer layer by layer, examining each layer under a microscope immediately after removal.
This allows the surgeon to target only cancerous tissue, preserving as much healthy skin as possible.
Other treatments, like standard excision, remove a predetermined margin of healthy tissue around the tumor, which may lead to unnecessary tissue loss.
-
In Mohs, each layer is checked in real-time using frozen sections, so the surgeon knows if the margins are clear before continuing.
Standard excisions often send the tissue to a lab for analysis later, which may take days and sometimes results in needing a second surgery if cancer remains.
-
Mohs surgery has the highest cure rate of any skin cancer treatment:
Up to 99% for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
Especially effective for recurrent or aggressive tumors.
-
Commonly used on the face, ears, hands, or neck, where tissue preservation and cosmetic outcome are critical.
-
Done by a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon who acts as both surgeon and pathologist—making it a very specialized and meticulous procedure.
When Is Mohs Surgery the Best Option for Treating Skin Cancer?
Mohs surgery is widely regarded as the most effective treatment for many types of skin cancer, offering the highest cure rate while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. This precision makes it especially appropriate for skin cancers that meet the following criteria:
-
Mohs is ideal for skin cancers that have returned after previous treatments or those with aggressive growth patterns, such as infiltrative or morpheaform basal cell carcinoma.
-
Mohs surgery is frequently recommended for cancers on the face, ears, nose, lips, eyelids, hands, and genitals—areas where both function and appearance are critical.
-
When the edges of a tumor are not clearly visible, Mohs surgery allows for precise mapping and complete removal of cancerous cells layer by layer.
-
Cancers that are larger or have grown quickly are often better managed with Mohs due to its meticulous nature and high success rate.
-
Patients with weakened immune systems may experience more aggressive or persistent skin cancers, making Mohs the preferred treatment option for effective management.
Why Choose Mohs Surgery?
With cure rates up to 99% and minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue, Mohs surgery combines medical excellence with the best possible cosmetic and functional outcomes.

Dermatopathology Services
We offer comprehensive dermatopathology services to ensure that every skin condition is accurately diagnosed. Dermatopathology involves the microscopic examination of skin biopsy specimens to identify skin disorders, infections, inflammatory conditions, and skin cancers.
Our experienced team works closely with a trusted outside laboratory for chemical processing of your biopsy specimens. Once processed, our in-house dermatopathologist carefully examines the slides and provides expert interpretations, ensuring you receive an accurate diagnosis in a timely manner.
How Dermatopathology Works
-
When necessary, your dermatologist will perform a skin biopsy—a small sample of tissue taken from the area of concern. This is a quick, minimally invasive procedure with minimal discomfort.
-
Your biopsy specimen is then sent to a highly trusted outside lab. There, it undergoes essential chemical processing, including fixation, embedding, and staining. This preparation is crucial for creating high-quality tissue slides that can be carefully examined under a microscope.
-
Once the slides are prepared, our in-house dermatopathologist, who is specifically trained in the integumentary system (the skin, hair, and nails), thoroughly examines the specimen. This specialized training allows for accurate identification of conditions such as:
Skin cancers (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma)
Benign growths (moles, cysts, skin tags)
Inflammatory conditions (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis)
Infectious diseases (fungal, viral, bacterial infections)
-
After the analysis, the dermatopathologist compiles a detailed diagnostic report, which is then reviewed by your treating dermatologist. Together, they will explain your results and discuss any necessary treatment plans.
The collaboration between our expert dermatopathologist and experienced dermatologists ensures you receive comprehensive care and clear communication about your skin health.
Why Dermatopathology Matters
-
ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS

The microscopic examination of skin tissue is essential for confirming a diagnosis. Whether you're dealing with a suspicious mole, an unexplained rash, or a persistent skin lesion, dermatopathology allows for precise identification of conditions that may not be visible to the naked eye.
-
TREATMENT PLANNING

OUR EXPERT DERMATOPATHOLOGIST
#fhtogglels/Read More/Close/eb
At Center for Dermatology & Skin Surgery, we are proud to have a board-certified dermatopathologist who is specially trained in the integumentary system—the skin, hair, and nails. With this expertise, our dermatopathologist is able to identify and interpret even the most subtle signs of skin conditions, from benign growths to complex skin cancers.
We prefer using a dermatopathologist who specializes in dermatology because it ensures the highest level of accuracy in the diagnosis of skin-related issues. A pathologist with this focused training brings advanced knowledge of skin-specific pathologies, such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, psoriasis, and dermatologic infections. This specialization allows for more precise and informed treatment recommendations.
By having an in-house dermatopathologist, we provide faster results and closer communication between the pathologist and your dermatologist, ensuring that your care is both precise and personalized.
FAQs
-
A dermatopathologist is a specialist who focuses exclusively on diagnosing skin conditions at the microscopic level. While a general pathologist may examine a variety of tissues, dermatopathologists are highly trained in recognizing skin-specific conditions, such as skin cancers, inflammatory skin diseases, and infectious skin disorders.
-
Once the biopsy sample has been processed and analyzed, results are typically available within 1-2 weeks. We make every effort to provide you with results as quickly as possible.
-
A skin biopsy is usually performed with a local anesthetic, which means you will feel little to no pain during the procedure. Afterward, you may experience mild soreness or swelling at the biopsy site.
-
Once the results are interpreted by our dermatopathologist, your provider will discuss the findings with you in person or via a phone. Benign results may be communicated via our HIPAA compliant patient engagement platform (Klara). We will ensure you have all the information you need to move forward with your treatment plan.
-
Dermatologists diagnose and treat a wide range of skin, hair, and nail conditions—including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, skin cancer, hair loss, warts, rashes, and more. We also provide cosmetic treatments for concerns like wrinkles, sun damage, and pigmentation.
-
This depends on your insurance plan. Some plans require a referral from your primary care provider. Please contact your insurance company or our office to confirm your coverage requirements.
-
Please bring a valid photo ID, your insurance card, copay if applicable, a list of current medications, and any relevant medical records or previous test results. If you're visiting for a specific concern, bringing photos or a list of symptoms can be helpful.
-
We recommend a full-body skin check once a year, especially for patients with a history of sun exposure, tanning bed use, or personal or family history of skin cancer. Your provider will suggest a schedule tailored to your risk level.
-
Yes, we offer a variety of cosmetic services, including Botox®, fillers, chemical peels, microneedling, and laser treatments. We also carry both medical-grade and over-the-counter skincare products to support your skin health at home.
-
Skin exams are not considered as preventive care by insurance companies. Therefore, we do not bill for general or routine skin checks. However, if a specific concern is identified during your visit—such as a suspicious mole, rash, age spots, or another diagnosable condition—we will bill your insurance based on that medical finding and the services provided to address it.
-
We carry a curated selection of medical-grade and retail skincare products designed to treat various concerns such as acne, aging, dryness, and pigmentation. Our providers can recommend products tailored to your skin type and goals.
-
Absolutely. Dermatologists are trained to diagnose and treat conditions related to the hair and nails, including alopecia (hair loss), nail fungus, brittle nails, and more.
-
Any new, changing, or unusual spot should be evaluated by a dermatologist—especially if it's asymmetrical, has irregular borders, multiple colors, is larger than a pencil eraser, or bleeds easily. Early detection is key in skin cancer prevention.
